] Here come the clones (of Google Chrome)

SRWare Iron
Freeware
http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php

SRWare Iron is a free and open source browser based on Chromium, which Google Chrome is based on. In fact, it behaves exactly like Google Chrome with a few exceptions. Iron is designed for privacy. The difference between Chrome and Iron is that, according to their website, Iron doesn't send data silently to Google as Chrome do. That also means it doesn't check for updates as well. Otherwise, its just like Chrome. You can even use themes and extensions designed for Chrome. It also features a built in adblocker, although it's not real clear how to configure it. Unlike Chrome, there's even a portable version of Iron.

ChromePlus
http://www.chromeplus.org/
Freeware
Platforms supported: WinXP/2003/Vista/7

ChromePlus is a tweaked version of Google Chrome. It has several additional features as compared to Google Chrome. Chrome Plus is build on the open-source project Chromium. It has all the functionalities that Google Chrome has. ChromePlus added some useful features such as Mouse gesture, Super drag, IE tab, etc. Super Drag is an interesting new option to open links by dragging them. These links can either be opened in the foreground or background. Mouse gestures and double-clicking tabs to close them are pretty self-explanatory. Available mouse gestures include navigating back and forward, switching to tabs, closing tabs or launching a page up or down command. Holding the right-mouse button and dragging the mouse in available directions will trigger the commands.

Most of the extra features in ChromePlus are available in some form or another on other browsers. The IE Tab functionality mimics the IE Tab extension for Firefox, which renders an Internet Explorer window inside Firefox (or in this case, Chrome) to give you access to those increasingly rare IE-only sites without leaving your preferred browser; the mouse gestures feature mimics mouse gestures available in some form or another on, well, virtually any browser (except you can't add any custom gestures yet).

A few additional features however is never a substitute to web browser security.

Note: You may have some trouble with ChromePlus on a 64-bit install of Windows 7

Lunascape
Freeware
http://www.lunascape.tv/
Platforms supported: Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/Server 2003/Server 2008

This internet browser combines the back end engines from IE, Safari and Mozilla in one package (Trident (Internet Explorer), Gecko (Firefox), and WebKit (Safari, Google Chrome)). LUNASCAPE is the world's first and only triple engine browser. It has been downloaded over 15 million times and it's available globally in 11 languages. It is compatible with the expanding array of Firefox add-ons in addition to the already supported Internet Explorer add-ons and Lunascape plug-ins, achieving the greatest degree of extensibility and flexibility among Web browsers. Transferring your add-ons from Firefox is very easy. You can browse lightning fast even with loads of add-ons installed. They've made special effort in ensuring fast launch even with many add-ons. You can view a web page in 3 rendering engines side-by-side to easily check the browser compatibility.

IE 6 (or above) is required for Lunascape to work. Minimum memory requirement is 1 GB.

How can I avoid Internet time-outs ?

Hi,

I'm on a slower internet connection speed.

Is there a way to tell my browser (Google Chrome) not to time-out
(unless its a genuine, invalid website)... - in recent weeks, I find
that i'm timing out a lot on valid websites..

IE, to keep collecting HTML code until the site has finished 100% loaded

(win XP) - Wireless internet connection...

I seem to be in a forrest of very odd error messages!

Now, I see this message - - usually on one site:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Debug Library - -

Program: C: Program files - Internet Explorer - iexplore.exe
File: dbgheap.c
Line 1132
Expression _CrtIsValidHeapPointer (pUserData)

For information on how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on asserts.
(Press Retry to debug the application)
Abort - Retry - Ignore"

None of those options do anything and the computer freezes forcing me to re-boot.

Just in case anyone else has a similar issue, I have a workable solution. (Not the perfect solution but I'm up and running.)

Downloaded Alcohol 120% and installed. Still no drive available to burn.

Opened Notepad and copied and pasted the following text:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]

Saved Notepad file as update.reg to desktop.

Doubleclicked update.reg file and merged into registry. Rebooted. Opened Alcohol burning program and was able to run/burn cd roms again.

Whew! (Off to un-install Roxio...it still shows no drive selected and still no options to select one in the drop down box.)

Yesi :)

Easiest way is to "Google" for your drive by manufacturer, and, modelnumber, with the term "firmware." Most links will give you a device toflash your firmware. If that doesn't work, tryuninstalling/reinstalling the programs and see if they will detect youdrive then.

I'vedefinitely tried rebooting, have never tried flashing thefirmware...not sure how to do that.

I wish I could remember what I did with my other laptop.....it reallydid solve the problem. If I can figure out which program made thechanges that caused this problem, it's outta here! (Yes, it did workbefore.)
